Why does hair turn grey?

The rate at which our hair turns grey depends on the genes we inherit. Hair colour is produced by pigment cells that are on our hair - melanocytes. As we age the activity of these cells declines, so new hair grows without pigment, i.e. the hair turns grey.

So what can we do?

Unfortunately, nothing can reverse the greying process.

However not smoking and eating well - including vitamin B (in particular B5) - can help slow down how fast we turn grey.
